Chapter 7 - VANESSA'S FINAL LIE

Vanessa was arrested at a private terminal two days after Peter Cross's arrest. She had a passport, cash, and a ticket booked under a different surname.

When detectives questioned her, she denied taking Megan's envelope. She claimed she had found it on a chair and burned it because she believed it contained private correspondence.

The security footage contradicted her.

She then said the charity transfers had been approved by Damon. The bank's digital records contradicted that too. The authorization token had been used from a device registered to Vanessa's personal office while Damon was overseas.

Finally, she blamed Peter.

“He handled the accounts,” she told the detective. “I trusted him.”

The detective placed a photograph on the table. It showed Vanessa meeting Peter at the service entrance on the night of the reception.

“What was in the case he gave you?”

Vanessa did not answer.

The police later recovered messages between the two. They discussed the final transfer, the overseas account, and the plan to destroy the remaining paper trail. One message referred to Megan's envelope as “the red package.”

Vanessa had known exactly what it was.

At the hospital, Megan learned that Vanessa had been charged. She did not feel triumphant. She felt tired.

“I just wanted my daughter to have an operation,” she told Damon.

“I know.”

“I never wanted to be part of your family's problems.”

“You weren't. You were the person who got caught in them.”

He told her the prosecution would not require her to confront Vanessa unless she chose to testify. Megan asked for time to think.

A week later, Mila was discharged. She wore a soft knitted hat and carried Mr. Button against her chest. The surgeon said the operation had been successful, though Mila would need follow-up appointments and careful monitoring.

Damon arranged for a car to take them home. Megan thanked the driver, then turned to Damon.

“I can go back to work when I'm ready.”

“You don't need to decide today.”

“I want to work. I don't want everything to change because you helped us.”

“Then it won't.”

He had already arranged for her position to remain available, but he offered her a choice of duties and hours while Mila recovered. Megan asked for a written agreement. Damon told his lawyer to prepare one.

When she arrived at the estate, the staff welcomed her quietly. Nobody made a speech. Mrs. Alvarez hugged her in the pantry and told her that the children's fund had contacted her about her son's hearing device.

“They're paying for it,” Mrs. Alvarez whispered. “All of it.”

Megan smiled.

That evening, she found a small envelope on her kitchen table. It contained a copy of the new fund charter. At the bottom was a note in Damon's handwriting:

No child should have to wait for someone powerful to notice.

Megan folded the note and placed it in a drawer.

She did not want to owe Damon her gratitude forever.

But she could accept that he had finally chosen to do the right thing.
