Chapter 8 - THE HEARING

The hearing took place three months later. By then, Mila had regained her strength. She could walk across the sitting room without tiring, though she still had to attend regular checkups.
Megan agreed to testify about the envelope and the events at the Christmas reception. She wore a simple navy dress and kept a photograph of Mila in her handbag.
Vanessa sat at the defense table in a dark suit. Her emerald earrings were gone. She looked smaller without the room arranged around her.
The prosecutor asked Megan to describe what she had seen.
“I had placed the envelope in my bag,” Megan said. “It contained the hospital payment documents and the bank draft for my daughter's surgery. I stepped away briefly. When I returned, it was missing.”
“Did you see Ms. Cross take it?”
“No. My daughter did.”
The prosecutor asked what Mila had said.
“She recognized the red ribbon and told me that Auntie had burned Mommy's money.”
Vanessa's lawyer objected that a three-year-old's statement was unreliable. The judge noted the objection and allowed the prosecution to rely on the camera footage and financial records instead.
The footage was played.
The courtroom watched Vanessa remove the envelope from Megan's bag, carry it to the fireplace, and drop it into the flames.
Then the bank records were presented. They showed the unauthorized transfers from the children's fund. Peter Cross testified that Vanessa had directed him to create the shell companies and arrange the final transfer.
Vanessa's lawyer argued that she had been acting under pressure from Peter and had not understood the full scope of the fraud.
The prosecutor displayed the messages.
One read: BURN THE RED PACKAGE. DAMON MUST NOT SEE THE REFERENCE.
Another read: AFTER THE FINAL TRANSFER, WE LEAVE.
The courtroom went silent.
Damon testified that he had not authorized the payments and that he had not known the fund was being misused. He acknowledged that his failure to supervise the account had allowed the theft to continue.
“I trusted the wrong person,” he said. “But the responsibility for the fund was mine. The families deserved better.”
The judge asked whether he intended to restore the missing money.
“Yes. Every dollar that can be traced will be returned, and the fund will cover the approved claims while the recovery proceeds.”
Megan listened from the witness chair. She had expected Damon to defend his reputation. Instead, he admitted his own failure.
At the end of the hearing, Vanessa was ordered held pending trial on fraud, conspiracy, and evidence-destruction charges. Peter remained in custody and agreed to cooperate.
Outside, reporters crowded the courthouse steps.
One asked Megan whether she felt she had defeated Vanessa.
Megan shook her head.
“I didn't defeat anyone. I wanted my daughter to live.”
Another asked Damon whether he was looking for a new fiancée.
He glanced toward Megan, who was holding Mila's hand.
“I'm not discussing my private life.”
Then he guided them through the crowd toward the waiting car.
Mila looked up at him.
“Are you sad?”
Damon crouched. “A little.”
“Why?”
“Because some people make choices that hurt others.”
Mila considered this.
“Be nice next time.”
May you like
Damon almost smiled.
“I'll try.”
