Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN IN THE HOSPITAL CORRIDOR

The days before Mila's surgery passed in a blur of appointments, scans, and careful instructions. Megan took unpaid leave from the estate, but Damon continued her salary and arranged for a nurse to explain the hospital routine.
He did not visit every day. He understood that his presence could make Megan uncomfortable. Instead, he sent practical help: a driver when the weather turned icy, meals that Mila would actually eat, and a small bag of toys for the long hospital waits.
Mila liked the stuffed rabbit best.
She named it Mr. Button.
On the evening before the operation, Megan found Damon sitting alone in the hospital's family lounge. His tie was loosened, and a file lay unopened on his lap.
“You don't have to stay,” she said.
“I know.”
“Why are you here?”
He looked at the closed doors leading to the pediatric ward.
“My mother died in a hospital when I was twelve. My father was in another city. I remember sitting in a corridor and wondering why nobody could make her better.”
Megan sat in the chair opposite him.
“I'm sorry.”
“I used to think money could stop that feeling. It can't. But sometimes it can give a family a chance they wouldn't otherwise have.”
She looked at him for a long moment. “You gave Mila that chance.”
Damon nodded once.
A nurse appeared and explained that Mila would be taken to the operating room at seven the next morning. Megan went to her daughter's bedside.
Mila was awake, holding Mr. Button.
“Mommy, will it hurt?”
“The doctors will help you sleep. When you wake up, I'll be there.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
Mila considered this, then held out the rabbit.
“Mr. Button come too.”
“He can wait right here with me.”
Damon watched from the doorway, then quietly stepped away.
At dawn, the operation began.
Megan sat with her hands clasped so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Damon remained several chairs away. He did not try to comfort her with empty assurances.
After four hours, the surgeon came out.
“The repair went well,” she said. “Mila is stable. The next twenty-four hours are important, but the result is encouraging.”
Megan covered her mouth and sobbed.
Damon closed his eyes briefly.
The surgeon explained the recovery plan, then returned to the intensive care unit.
Megan turned to Damon. “She's alive.”
“Yes.”
“She has a chance.”
“Yes.”
She reached for his hand without thinking. He held it gently, and neither spoke for a moment.
Then Daniel called.
“Boss, Peter Cross has been arrested. We found the original trust records in his apartment. There's proof Vanessa used your authorization token to approve the transfers.”
Damon's expression changed.
“Anything else?”
“Peter says Vanessa planned to leave the country after the final transfer. He also says the envelope she burned contained a document she thought would connect her to the charity account.”
Damon looked toward the ICU doors.
“Keep the police informed. No private arrangements. I want every record preserved.”
He ended the call.
Megan watched him. “Is it over?”
May you like
“Not yet. But she won't be able to hurt you or Mila.”
For the first time in many months, Megan believed someone when they said that.
