Chapter 2 - The Lawyer Who Came Before Midnight

Daniel Kline answered Luca’s call on the third ring.
It was 10:26 p.m.
The engagement dinner had ended.
The ring was still on Vanessa’s hand.
No one had discussed it.
Luca put the call on speaker.
“Daniel.”
“Luca. I heard there was some disruption tonight.”
That irritated him immediately.
“How?”
A pause.
“Vanessa called.”
Of course.
Luca looked at her.
She did not deny.
“What were you doing at my house Tuesday night?”
Silence.
Then:
“I met Vanessa.”
“When?”
“A little after eleven.”
“Why?”
“I’d rather discuss privileged matters privately.”
“My fiancée is sitting here.”
Another pause.
“The privilege may not be yours alone.”
That changed everything.
Luca looked at Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
He said:
“Explain.”
Daniel’s voice became careful.
“Vanessa retained me independently for a limited consultation.”
“You are my estate lawyer.”
“Yes.”
“And you agreed to represent my fiancée in a matter involving my estate.”
“No.”
Daniel emphasized.
“I agreed to consult regarding her own parental planning and potential conflicts. I specifically did not represent her regarding claims against you.”
Luca’s anger shifted shape.
“Why come to my house?”
“Because she asked.”
“That is not an answer.”
“She said she could not safely speak from her apartment or office.”
Vanessa whispered:
“I thought Adrian had someone watching me.”
Roman looked at her.
“Evidence?”
“Maybe.”
Maybe.
Not enough.
Then Daniel continued.
“I met her in the west sitting room. We reviewed no Vale trust documents belonging to you.”
“What did you review?”
“Her custody order.”
Luca stared.
“You knew about Nico.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Two weeks.”
“And you said nothing to me.”
“I could not.”
“Because she was your client.”
“Yes.”
“You should have declined.”
“Possibly.”
Good.
No defensiveness.
Daniel continued.
“I disclosed the potential conflict to her and told her I could not advise her on any interest adverse to you. I recommended separate family-law counsel.”
“Did she take it?”
“Yes.”
Name:
Rachel Dunn.
Then why return downtown at one?
Vanessa answered.
“Because Daniel had a document.”
“What document?”
She looked at Sal.
Then Emma.
Luca said:
“Stay.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“A letter from Adrian.”
Roman leaned.
“What letter?”
Daniel said:
“It was delivered to my office that evening.”
Addressed to Vanessa.
Not Daniel.
How did Adrian know to send to Luca’s lawyer?
That was alarming.
The letter said:
You are trying to put my son inside Moretti money.
Stop.
Nico is not a bargaining chip.
If you marry Luca before custody terms are revised, I will file emergency motion.
No explicit threat.
Legal warning.
Then another line:
Ask Luca what his father promised mine in 2004.
Bianca went pale.
Luca saw.
“Aunt.”
She looked down.
“What happened in 2004?”
Bianca’s hands tightened around coffee cup.
“Your father and Vittorio Vale settled something.”
“What?”
“Not business.”
“What?”
She looked at Vanessa.
Then:
“A child-support scandal.”
Luca stared.
Whose child?
Not Nico. Too early.
Adrian was maybe young adult.
Bianca told.
In 2004, a Moretti cousin named Carlo had a child with a woman tied to Vale family.
Custody dispute threatened to expose both families’ finances and alleged criminal associations.
Luca’s father, Matteo, and Vittorio Vale brokered a private arrangement.
Not illegal on face.
Money moved into an educational trust.
Both sides agreed to stop using family businesses as leverage.
The child stayed out of press.
But the documents included a mutual promise:
Neither family would attempt to gain leverage over the other through guardianship, adoption, or trust-beneficiary status of a child tied to both families.
Not binding forever perhaps.
Not about future unrelated children legally.
But symbolically huge.
Adrian’s letter suggested he viewed Nico potentially becoming Moretti-dependent as violation.
Luca looked at Vanessa.
“You knew about this?”
“No.”
“Daniel?”
“He found the old settlement in archived files after Adrian’s letter referenced 2004.”
“Why didn’t you call me?”
Daniel answered:
“Because I was reviewing whether it had any legal effect and because Vanessa’s custody matter was confidential.”
Luca rubbed his face.
Everything was technically explainable.
Still wrong.
Then Sal said:
“I saw another man.”
Everyone turned.
At West Addison?
No.
At Wacker.
When Vanessa entered the law office, Sal stayed in car.
At 1:31, a man exited side entrance, looked at sedan, then walked away.
Sal recognized him only later from newspaper.
Adrian Vale.
Vanessa stood.
“No.”
Sal frowned.
“You didn’t know?”
“I didn’t see him.”
Daniel said:
“Adrian was not in my office.”
Roman asked:
“Security logs?”
Daniel could pull.
Then if Adrian in building but not office, maybe stalking.
Or another meeting.
The building had restaurant, offices? We established Kline only on floors but building many tenants.
Adrian could be there for another tenant.
Need evidence.
Then Roman’s analyst called back.
Daniel Kline’s car did leave Moretti mansion Tuesday 11:47.
Vanessa and Sal left 12:13.
At 12:54, Daniel’s car entered his office garage.
At 1:17, Sal’s sedan entered public garage.
At 1:28, a black SUV registered to Vale Shipping entered.
So Adrian arrived after Vanessa.
He likely knew.
Question how.
Vanessa’s phone?
Tracked?
Tip?
Coincidence?
Roman asked permission to inspect Vanessa’s device for signs of location sharing.
She froze.
Then:
“I don’t want you going through my phone.”
Fair.
Roman said:
“Then take it to independent forensic examiner or police if you believe stalking.”
She looked at Luca.
He did not pressure.
“Your phone is yours.”
Good.
She nodded.
“Independent.”
Then Nico.
Luca asked:
“Does Adrian see him?”
“Yes. Every other weekend supervised? No.”
Let's make ordinary joint custody but Vanessa primary? Yet Nico living with sister creates issue. Need plausible.
Vanessa explained after stalking incident, she and Adrian modified arrangement privately through court:
Vanessa retained legal custody.
Nico lived primarily with Elena in Chicago under temporary guardianship?
That would be odd if mother available.
Maybe Elena is licensed kinship guardian because Vanessa's public life risky, but legally Vanessa parent. Let's make a court-approved temporary guardianship renewed annually due security threats and Vanessa travel, with Adrian retaining visitation and parental rights. This is unusual but possible.
Luca asked:
“You voluntarily placed him with your sister.”
“Yes.”
“Why not tell me?”
“Because once you knew, everyone around you would know.”
Emma felt that.
Security.
Lawyers.
Family.
Luca said:
“You’re not wrong about that.”
That surprised Vanessa.
Then:
“But you still denied he existed.”
“Yes.”
Then engagement.
Would Luca call off immediately? Not yet. We need story.
He removed ring? He could say wedding paused.
“Wedding is postponed.”
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
“Luca.”
“Not canceled tonight.”
She looked.
“I need facts before vows.”
Good.
Then Sal.
Luca turned.
“You’re back Monday.”
Sal smiled through wet eyes.
“Kid, I’m seventy-one.”
“You’re driving Wisconsin.”
“Fine.”
Then:
“And after?”
“We discuss retirement like adults.”
Good.
Sal nodded.
Then Emma.
Luca looked.
“You disobeyed Vanessa.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I thought she was lying.”
“Did you know about Nico?”
“No.”
“Did you know about lawyer?”
“No.”
“You still brought Sal into dinner.”
“Yes.”
“Do you regret?”
Emma looked at Vanessa, who was crying.
Then Sal.
“I regret embarrassing him.”
Sal said:
“I’m old enough to survive dinner.”
Then Emma:
“I don’t regret not putting him in a cab.”
Luca nodded.
“No punishment.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“How generous.”
Luca turned.
“Do not.”
She looked away.
Then Roman got another message.
Kline office security footage.
Adrian Vale did enter building at 1:29.
He went to floor twenty-three.
Not Kline’s floor.
Tenant:
Hale Family Law & Mediation.
Rachel Dunn worked there as of last month? Let's make Rachel Dunn was partner at Hale Family Law, yes.
Vanessa stared.
“That’s my family lawyer.”
Adrian had gone to her lawyer’s office while she was downstairs with Daniel.
Did Rachel meet him?
If so, conflict.
Daniel said:
“You need separate counsel immediately.”
No kidding.
Then Vanessa’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
She looked at screen.
Roman said:
“Don’t answer if you don’t want.”
She answered.
Speaker off.
Her face changed.
“Hello?”
A child’s voice.
“Mom?”
Vanessa stood so fast chair scraped.
“Nico?”
He was crying.
Then:
“Aunt Elena says there are men outside.”
Roman moved instantly.
Not private Moretti violence.
Call police.
Vanessa put speaker.
Nico whispered:
“One has a camera.”
The West Addison house had become part of the story before anyone inside dining room had decided what the story was.
Before anyone left the mansion that night, Luca did one more thing.
He asked Maria Torres to freeze every change to his estate plan.
Not cancel.
Freeze.
No new beneficiaries.
No spouse provisions.
No amendments based on engagement.
No instructions through Vanessa.
No informal calls from family office treated as authorization.
Maria asked:
“For how long?”
“Until I know who has seen what.”
Good.
Then Luca looked at Vanessa.
“This is not punishment.”
“It feels like it.”
“It is risk control.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Your language gets colder when you’re hurt.”
He considered.
“Yes.”
That was honest.
Then she asked whether he intended to remove the standard future-spouse provisions entirely.
“I don’t know.”
“Because of Nico?”
“No.”
“Then because of me.”
“Yes.”
No hiding.
Then Daniel Kline said something important.
“Do not redesign an estate plan in the middle of a relationship crisis.”
Everyone looked.
He continued.
“Freeze if needed. Preserve. But do not write permanent documents out of anger.”
Luca nodded.
That advice probably saved months of later correction.
Then Sal, still sitting with his cardboard box, cleared his throat.
“Can I ask a stupid question?”
Luca looked.
“You’ve earned one.”
“Why did Adrian know enough about the trust to be angry before Vanessa even told you about the boy?”
The room went quiet.
Exactly.
Vanessa had asked Daniel questions only two weeks earlier.
Adrian’s letter referred to Moretti money as if he already knew specifics.
The leaked draft might explain some of it, but the timing still needed mapping.
Roman wrote the sequence on paper.
Trust draft circulated internally Monday.
Paolo downloaded Monday night.
Adrian’s letter delivered Tuesday evening.
Vanessa met Daniel Tuesday night.
Emergency petition filed Wednesday.
So Adrian could have learned from the Monday leak before writing the letter.
No supernatural knowledge.
No need invent another source.
Roman crossed one mystery off.
Luca looked at the paper.
“How many problems become smaller when someone writes down the timeline?”
Emma, still standing near the sideboard, almost smiled.
Sal said:
“Most of them.”
Then Luca looked at Emma.
“You can go now.”
She hesitated.
“Sal?”
“He stays because I asked.”
Sal lifted the cardboard box.
“I’m apparently un-retired.”
Emma nodded.
Then she left.
In the corridor, her hands finally started shaking.
Not because of Nico.
Because twenty minutes earlier she had walked into a dining room and disobeyed the woman who was supposed to become mistress of the house.
Only now did her body understand what that could have cost.
She leaned against the wall.
Aunt Bianca found her.
“You all right?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Emma laughed once.
“No.”
Bianca handed her a glass of water.
Then said:
“You did not save this family tonight.”
Emma looked up.
“I know.”
“Good.”
Bianca’s eyes softened.
“You gave an old man a chance to speak. That’s enough.”
That distinction mattered.
Emma had not exposed every secret.
May you like
She had opened a door.
What came through it belonged to the people who had made the secrets.
