Chapter 3 - The House on West Addison

Chicago police arrived before Roman’s people.
That was deliberate.
Vanessa wanted security, but Luca refused to turn a frightened child’s front porch into a Moretti-Vale confrontation.
“Police first,” he said.
Roman coordinated from the mansion.
Two unmarked Moretti security cars stopped one block away only after Elena Bellini agreed.
No one entered the house without permission.
Luca stayed behind.
So did Sal.
Vanessa went with a detective and her independent lawyer? Not yet. She went with Roman, but police lead.
Emma did not go.
Good.
She had already crossed enough boundaries for one night.
At West Addison, officers found two men in a parked car.
Photographers.
Licensed private investigators.
They had legal permits? PIs need licensing. They said they were conducting surveillance for custody litigation.
Client:
Hale Family Law?
No.
Vieri Investigations, retained by Adrian Vale’s attorney.
Adrian had hired them.
Why outside Nico’s home at 11 p.m.?
They claimed they were documenting Vanessa’s late-night visits because Adrian believed she was hiding changes in Nico’s living arrangement before marriage.
Legal surveillance in public can be lawful.
But photographing a child at night was aggressive.
Police documented identities.
No arrest.
Then Elena.
Vanessa’s older sister was thirty-nine, dark-haired, exhausted, and furious.
She opened door only after confirming through peephole.
Nico was behind her in pajamas.
One red mitten lay on entry table.
The other was in Luca’s mansion.
Vanessa dropped to knees.
Nico ran.
“Mom.”
Roman looked away.
Elena did not.
“You told me nobody knew.”
Vanessa held boy.
“They knew before tonight.”
“Who?”
“Adrian.”
“He always knew where Nico lived.”
“Yes.”
“Then who are you hiding from?”
That question.
Vanessa closed eyes.
Elena turned to Roman.
“Are you Moretti?”
“I work for Luca.”
“Then stay there.”
He did.
Boundary.
Then child.
Nico looked six.
Brown hair.
Serious eyes.
Red pajama shirt with dinosaurs.
He asked:
“Is Luca mad?”
Vanessa froze.
“You know Luca?”
Elena looked at her.
Vanessa looked caught.
Nico continued:
“You said he was nice but couldn’t know me yet.”
There.
She had talked about Luca.
Not told Luca about Nico.
The asymmetry hurt.
Then Roman asked only logistical questions.
Any threat messages?
Any unusual cars before?
Any contact from Adrian?
Any recent court papers?
Elena said Adrian called that afternoon.
He asked whether Vanessa planned to move Nico after marriage.
Elena said no.
He said:
“Make sure she understands he is my son before he is Moretti property.”
Ugly.
But not threat.
Then family-law issue.
Rachel Dunn, Vanessa’s attorney, had texted Elena at 10:42 p.m.:
Do not speak to anyone about guardianship until I call.
Why?
Vanessa stared.
“I didn’t authorize that.”
Roman said:
“Save it.”
Good.
Then Rachel’s office.
Adrian had visited same night.
Potential conflict.
Vanessa called Rachel.
No answer.
Her voicemail:
Office closed.
Vanessa’s stomach turned.
Then Nico asked:
“Can I go back to bed?”
Everyone stopped.
Of course.
Adults building conspiracy around a six-year-old.
Elena took him upstairs.
Vanessa kissed forehead.
No interrogation.
Good.
Then Roman privately told Vanessa:
“If this is custody litigation, you need independent family counsel not connected to any lawyer who met Adrian tonight.”
“Yes.”
Then Sal’s mitten.
Vanessa looked at its pair on table.
She began to cry again.
Elena watched.
“You lost the other.”
“Sal found it.”
“Who’s Sal?”
“Luca’s driver.”
“The old man?”
Vanessa nodded.
Elena’s face changed.
“Was he the one you said had to go?”
Roman heard.
“What?”
Vanessa closed eyes.
Elena answered.
“My sister called Tuesday morning asking if I knew a discreet retirement community near Milwaukee.”
Vanessa stared.
“Stop.”
“No.”
Elena was done protecting.
“She said an elderly employee had seen Nico and she needed him out of Chicago before the wedding.”
Roman’s face hardened.
Vanessa said:
“I wanted Sal away from pressure.”
Elena laughed.
“You wanted him gone.”
“Yes.”
There.
Then why Milwaukee?
Vanessa’s friend ran luxury retirement service? But Sal not wanting. She planned six months salary plus relocation offer, not forced. Still coercive.
She admitted she asked an agency to call Sal with a job/retirement placement opportunity in Wisconsin.
Roman asked:
“Without telling him why.”
“Yes.”
“Would you have threatened his job if he refused?”
“No.”
“But you told him Luca wanted him retired.”
“Yes.”
That was enough.
Then Elena said:
“She does this.”
Vanessa looked.
“What?”
“When she’s afraid, she arranges people.”
That sentence echoed.
She arranges people.
Luca later would hear.
Then Rachel Dunn finally called.
Vanessa put Roman on speaker with consent.
Rachel sounded tense.
“Do not discuss custody with Luca tonight.”
“Why did Adrian come to your office?”
Silence.
Then:
“He did not meet with me.”
“Did he meet anyone?”
“My partner.”
“About Nico?”
“I can’t disclose.”
Vanessa’s face went white.
“You represent me.”
“I represented you for a consultation. We did not execute a full engagement after conflict review.”
“What?”
Vanessa had signed intake.
Paid retainer?
Rachel said retainer returned yesterday due conflict.
Vanessa had not seen email.
Why conflict?
One of Rachel’s partners had represented Vale family in prior matter.
That should have been disclosed sooner.
Adrian exploited.
Then Rachel said:
“Adrian’s counsel filed an emergency petition this afternoon.”
For what?
Modification of parenting and guardianship arrangement.
Grounds:
Vanessa planned imminent marriage to Luca Moretti and potential relocation/identity exposure.
Alleged she concealed Nico’s existence from future spouse while exploring trust-beneficiary status.
Claimed this demonstrated instability and intent to entangle child in Moretti assets without Adrian’s consent.
Vanessa sat.
The petition quoted details from her meeting with Daniel Kline.
How?
Attorney-client confidentiality.
Daniel did not tell Adrian.
Vanessa did not.
Who knew?
Rachel? She knew some via Vanessa maybe.
Elena.
Perhaps Kline staff.
Then Rachel said:
“The petition includes a copy of a draft trust memo.”
Luca’s draft trust.
Roman’s face changed.
That should not be outside Kline.
Vanessa whispered:
“What memo?”
Rachel emailed copy.
Roman opened.
Header:
CONFIDENTIAL DRAFT — MORETTI FAMILY TRUST.
Language about “children or dependents of spouse who reside in grantor’s household for six months or more may be eligible discretionary beneficiaries upon written designation.”
This was not final.
Not signed.
Luca had never shown Vanessa.
Yet Adrian had it.
So the problem was bigger than Vanessa asking questions.
Someone had leaked Luca’s trust draft to Adrian.
Then Roman called Luca.
He listened.
No interruption.
Then asked:
“Who had the draft?”
Daniel Kline.
Luca.
Luca’s personal attorney Maria Torres.
Trust administrator.
Maybe family office counsel.
Vanessa did not.
Unless obtained Tuesday at office.
Daniel said he never gave.
Security logs to check.
Then Nico’s guardianship.
Adrian’s petition asked emergency order preventing Vanessa from changing Nico’s residence, school, surname, or trust/beneficiary status without court approval.
Some of that might be reasonable.
Some unnecessary.
No request to remove Nico from Elena that night.
So not kidnapping emergency.
Legal pressure.
Then Luca said:
“Do not respond through my lawyers.”
Vanessa frowned.
“Why?”
“Because this is your son.”
Good.
“Get your own counsel.”
She nodded.
Then:
“Luca.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
He was silent.
Not ready.
Then he said:
“Keep Nico safe.”
No forgiveness.
No marriage decision.
Just child.
Then police left after photographers departed.
Roman security stayed outside only with Elena’s agreement until morning.
Vanessa slept on couch.
At 3:40 a.m., Nico came downstairs.
Could not sleep.
He saw Vanessa.
“Are you still marrying Luca?”
She froze.
Children hear.
She said:
“I don’t know.”
“Does he not like me?”
Her face broke.
“No. He doesn’t know you.”
“Because you didn’t tell him.”
“Yes.”
Nico thought.
Then:
“That was dumb.”
Vanessa laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
He climbed beside.
Then asked:
“Can I meet Sal? He has my mitten.”
She smiled.
“Maybe.”
Morning.
At mansion, Luca sat with Sal in garage.
Same black sedan.
No cardboard box now.
Sal’s coat hung on hook.
Luca held red mitten.
“What do you think?”
Sal rubbed thermos.
“About Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“I think she lied.”
“Anything else?”
“I think she loves that boy.”
“Enough?”
Sal looked at him.
“Love doesn’t make lies disappear, kid.”
Luca smiled faintly.
Sal had called him kid since age five.
Then:
“Would you forgive?”
“Not my engagement.”
Fair.
Then Sal said:
“You know what bothered me?”
“What?”
“She thought you would throw away a seventy-one-year-old man because he saw something inconvenient.”
Luca looked down.
“That should have sounded impossible to you.”
“It did.”
“Did it?”
Sal paused.
Then:
“I wasn’t sure.”
There.
Luca’s throat tightened.
Why would Sal, of all people, believe Luca could discard him?
Because Luca had become busy.
Distant.
Delegated household.
Allowed Vanessa to speak for him.
Stopped driving with Sal except annual Wisconsin.
Rarely sat garage anymore.
Not abuse.
Distance.
Enough space for lie.
Then Sal said:
“You stopped asking me things yourself.”
Luca nodded.
Another system failure.
Then Roman entered garage carrying printed email.
Trust draft leak source.
Kline’s document-management system showed it had been downloaded Monday evening by an authorized external login tied to:
Moretti Family Office.
User:
Marco Bellini.
Vanessa’s older brother?
Emma didn't know. Vanessa said only sister? She lied about being only child, then sister Elena. Now Marco? Too many lies. Better not. Could be Matteo Bellini, father? Dead. Maybe Petra? Let's use household financial controller: Vincent Bellini would suggest relation. Avoid.
User:
Paolo Greco.
Who is Paolo?
Luca’s deputy family-office counsel.
Trusted fourteen years.
And Paolo’s wife was Adrian Vale’s second cousin.
Connection nobody considered important.
Until now.
Luca stared.
Roman said:
“He accessed the trust draft twenty-four hours before Adrian filed.”
May you like
The red mitten was no longer the only thing connecting two families.
Someone inside Luca’s own office had been feeding Adrian exactly what he needed.
