Chapter 1 - The Voice Behind the Mirror

The mansion had never looked more beautiful.
White roses climbed the marble staircase. Crystal chandeliers scattered light across the polished floors, and hundreds of guests filled the ballroom beneath a ceiling painted with pale gold clouds. A string quartet played beside the grand windows while waiters carried champagne through the crowd.
Daniel Whitmore stood near the entrance, accepting congratulations with the practiced smile of a man who had convinced himself he was finally ready to be happy again.
In less than an hour, he would marry Vanessa Hale.
She was elegant, poised, and seemingly devoted to him. She had helped him raise his six-year-old daughter, Lily, after his first wife, Emma, had disappeared two years earlier. Vanessa had been the one to explain that Emma had left during a storm, that her car had been found near the river, and that the search had ended without a body.
Daniel had wanted to believe there had been an accident. Vanessa had made the story sound certain.
Lily had never believed it.
She stood near the staircase in a pale pink dress, holding a small stuffed rabbit by one ear. Her father had told her that her mother was gone, but he had never explained why the memories of Emma still felt so close.
“Stay with Aunt Clara,” Daniel told her, kneeling to straighten the ribbon at her waist. “The ceremony will begin soon.”
“Can I see the bride's room?”
“Not now, sweetheart. Vanessa is getting ready.”
“I just want to see the flowers.”
Daniel glanced toward the hallway. “Only for a minute. Don't touch anything, and come straight back.”
Lily nodded.
She slipped away while the adults were distracted.
The bride's dressing room was at the end of the east corridor. Its doors stood slightly open. Inside, the room smelled of roses and perfume. Vanessa's wedding gown hung from a tall screen, and a bouquet of white flowers rested on the vanity.
Lily stepped carefully around a pair of silver shoes.
Then she heard a sound.
Knock.
She stopped.
It came again.
Knock. Knock.
Lily looked toward the enormous antique mirror fixed above the vanity. Its carved wooden frame covered nearly the entire wall.
“Hello?” she whispered.
For a moment, there was silence.
Then a woman's voice came through the wall.
“Please…”
Lily's fingers tightened around her rabbit.
“Please, can someone hear me?”
The voice was weak, trembling, and familiar.
Lily knew that voice.
She had heard it in bedtime stories, in old recordings, and in the few memories she still carried of being held against a warm shoulder.
“Mommy?”
A pause.
Then the voice whispered, “Lily?”
The little girl began to shake.
“Mommy?”
“Baby, please. Don't be scared. Find your daddy.”
Lily ran to the mirror and pressed both palms against the frame. She could hear breathing behind it.
“Are you inside?”
“Yes. I'm here. Please hurry.”
Lily looked around. A decorative brass hammer lay on the vanity beside a box of hairpins. She dragged it down with both hands. It was heavy, and the first swing barely made a mark.
She tried again.
The wooden panel beneath the mirror cracked.
“Lily?” the woman called. “Be careful.”
“I'm getting you out!”
The third blow split a narrow strip of wood.
A maid appeared in the doorway. “Miss Lily! What are you doing?”
“My mommy is in there!”
The maid stared at her, then at the damaged panel.
Before she could move, Lily screamed, “GET MY DADDY!”
The sound carried down the corridor.
Daniel heard it from the ballroom.
He abandoned his conversation and ran.
“What happened?” he demanded as he reached the room.
Lily stood beside the mirror, crying, the hammer held against her chest.
“Daddy, she's in the wall.”
Daniel crouched. “Who is?”
“Mommy. I heard her.”
His face changed.
“Lily, sweetheart…”
A faint knock sounded from behind the wood.
Daniel went completely still.
Then a woman's voice whispered, “Daniel?”
The champagne glass in his hand slipped and shattered against the floor.
He stared at the mirror.
He knew that voice.
He had heard it in his dreams for two years.
“Emma?”
A weak answer came from behind the wall.
“Please. Get me out.”

Daniel took the hammer from Lily.
And the wedding stopped being a wedding.
