Chapter 6 - What the Flowers Recorded

The recorder contained more than the conversations Daniel had heard.

Forensic technicians recovered deleted audio, including a file made several days before Emma was imprisoned. In it, Vanessa and Richard discussed a small black device hidden inside a wedding bouquet.

The recorder had been placed there to capture Daniel's private conversations with business partners during the reception. Richard intended to use the recordings to manipulate a board vote scheduled for the following week.

But Emma had discovered it.

She had managed to remove the device from a drawer in the storage room and hide it inside the bouquet while Vanessa briefly left the dressing room. She had hoped Daniel would find it if she could not escape.

The flowers were not simply evidence of the conspiracy. They were the only way Emma had been able to send him a warning.

Detective Ellis explained the discovery to Daniel.

“Your wife knew the wedding was part of the plan,” she said. “She likely heard Vanessa discussing the ceremony through the wall. She wanted you to find the recorder.”

Daniel looked at the evidence photograph.

“She was trapped behind the mirror, and she still thought about protecting me.”

“She was trying to protect Lily too.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

The investigation then turned toward the mansion's renovation records. The hidden compartment had been built during a six-week project, but the invoices had been disguised as work on the east wing's electrical system. Richard had approved the payments through a construction company he controlled.

The security logs had also been altered. On the night Emma disappeared, a camera near the service entrance had been switched off for twenty-seven minutes.

A guard named Peter confessed that Vanessa had paid him to look away. He had believed Emma was being held temporarily until she signed the trust documents. He claimed he had not known the room would be sealed.

Detective Ellis did not accept that as an excuse.

Daniel returned to the mansion with police permission to collect Lily's belongings. The house felt different. The white roses had been removed. The wedding decorations stood in boxes near the ballroom entrance.

He walked into the dressing room.

The mirror had been taken down. The broken wall was exposed, its edges jagged and dark. He stared at the space where Emma had spent months in captivity.

A small object lay on the floor.

It was a child's drawing, folded twice. Lily had drawn three people holding hands beneath a yellow sun. On the back, in Emma's handwriting, were the words:

For the day we are together again.

Daniel sat down on the bare floor.

He remembered Emma drawing with Lily at the kitchen table. He remembered the way she used to leave notes inside his briefcase. He remembered how quickly Vanessa had moved into the empty space after the disappearance.

He had mistaken comfort for love.

His phone rang. It was Emma's doctor.

She was improving. Her infection was responding to treatment, and she would likely be discharged in several days.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Thank you,” he said.

May you like

He placed the drawing carefully inside his jacket.

Then he left the room and instructed the estate manager to have the entire east wing inspected. No more locked rooms. No more hidden doors. No more secrets kept for the sake of appearances.
