Chapter 4 - The Night Emma Disappeared

The final recording began with rain.
Then came the sound of a car door and Emma's voice, frightened but clear.
“Richard, I told you I won't sign it.”
Richard answered, “You don't understand what you're refusing.”
“I understand perfectly. You want me to approve a transfer from Lily's trust into one of your companies. The money belongs to her.”
“It's family money.”
“It's my daughter's future.”
A second voice entered. Vanessa.
“Emma, stop acting as if you're the only person who cares about Lily.”
Emma laughed bitterly. “You don't care about Lily. You care about Daniel's money.”
There was a sharp sound, then a struggle.
The recording continued from a distance. Richard told someone to take Emma's phone. Vanessa said they should make it look like an accident near the river.
Daniel stopped breathing.
He remembered that night. The storm. The call from Vanessa saying Emma's car had been found. The police search. The weeks of grief. The funeral service held without a body because the river had not given them one.
He had never questioned Vanessa's account because she had been the person who comforted him.
The recording went on.
Richard: “The car is in place. The report will say she drove into the water.”
Vanessa: “And if Daniel asks?”
Richard: “You tell him she was upset. You tell him she left a note.”
Vanessa: “There is no note.”
Richard: “Then we'll make one.”
Daniel pushed back from the table.
Detective Ellis paused the recording.
“I'm sorry,” she said.
He looked at her. “She was alive all this time.”
“Yes.”
“In my house.”
The detective did not answer.
Daniel walked into the corridor. He leaned against the wall and pressed both hands over his face. He had spent two years mourning Emma, but now the grief had changed shape. It was mixed with guilt so sharp he could barely stand.
He had believed the story because believing it had been easier than questioning the woman beside him.
Lily stirred in Clara's arms.
“Daddy?”
He wiped his face and went to her.
“I'm here.”
“Can I see Mommy?”
“The doctors are helping her. Soon.”
“Did Vanessa put her in the wall?”
Daniel hesitated. He would not lie to his daughter again.
“Yes. Vanessa and someone else hurt Mommy.”
“Why?”
“Because they wanted something that belonged to you.”
Lily thought about that.
“Can they take it?”
“No. Not anymore.”
A nurse appeared and said Emma was awake.
Daniel entered the room alone. Emma lay against white pillows, an IV line attached to her arm. Her face was still pale, but her eyes were open.
He approached slowly.
“Emma.”
She looked at him for a long time.
“You came.”
“Of course I came.”
“You were going to marry her.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I know.”
Emma looked away.
“I heard the music from the room,” she whispered. “I knew it was your wedding day.”
“I am so sorry.”
“I called for you.”
“I know.”
“Every day.”
He sat beside her bed, but did not touch her until she reached for his hand.
“I believed you were gone,” he said. “I should have questioned everything. I should have kept looking.”
“You were grieving.”
“I let the person who hurt you tell me what happened.”
Emma closed her eyes.
“I don't know if I can forgive that.”
“You don't have to decide now.”
A tear slid down her cheek.
“Where is Lily?”
“Outside. She hasn't stopped asking for you.”
Emma began to cry.
May you like
Daniel held her hand and stayed quiet.
For the first time in two years, he understood that finding Emma did not erase what had happened. It only gave them a chance to begin facing it.
