Chapter 7 - The Truth in Court

The first court hearing took place three weeks later.

Vanessa arrived in a plain dark suit, without the diamonds she had worn on the wedding day. Richard appeared beside his attorney, looking irritated rather than frightened.

Daniel sat behind the prosecutor. Emma was not required to attend the first hearing, and he was grateful. Her recovery was still fragile.

The charges included kidnapping, unlawful confinement, conspiracy, fraud, and attempted theft involving the family trust. Additional charges were being considered as investigators reviewed the financial records.

Vanessa's attorney argued that Emma had been held for her own protection because she was allegedly suffering from a mental health crisis.

The prosecutor played the audio.

Vanessa's voice filled the courtroom.

“She won't sign the papers.”

Richard's reply followed.

“Then she stays where she is until she does.”

The room became silent.

Daniel watched Vanessa. She did not look at him.

After the hearing, a reporter called out questions about the canceled wedding and whether Daniel had ignored warning signs.

He stopped.

“I believed a lie,” he said. “I should have asked more questions. I should have listened to my daughter when she said her mother was not gone. I cannot change that. I can make sure the people responsible answer for what they did.”

He did not answer anything else.

Outside, Clara waited with Lily. The little girl held a drawing of a house with a large red door.

“Is Mommy coming home today?” she asked.

“Tomorrow,” Daniel said.

Lily smiled.

At home, Daniel had prepared a bedroom for Emma on the ground floor, where she would not need to climb stairs. He had removed the heavy locks from the interior doors and replaced them with simple handles. He had also asked the staff to keep the house quiet and give Emma privacy.

When she arrived, Lily ran to her.

Emma crouched carefully and opened her arms.

The child buried her face against her mother.

Daniel watched from the doorway.

Later, after Lily had fallen asleep, Emma joined him in the sitting room.

“Do you hate me?” he asked.

She looked surprised.

“Why would I hate you?”

“Because I didn't find you.”

“You didn't know where I was.”

“I should have known something was wrong.”

Emma sat down slowly.

“Daniel, I spent two years trapped in a room. I had a lot of time to think. I was angry with you. I was angry with myself. But I also knew how much Vanessa had manipulated you.”

He sat across from her.

“I don't want us to pretend everything is normal.”

“Neither do I.”

“I don't know what happens to us.”

“Neither do I.”

She looked toward the hallway where Lily was sleeping.

“But I want our daughter to have both of us. Whatever that looks like.”

Daniel nodded.

May you like

“That is what I want too.”

For the first time, they were not making promises they could not keep. They were agreeing to tell the truth, even when it hurt.
